In my Public Relations and Corporate Writing class, I was tasked with selecting a corporation to serve as a client and designing a comprehensive PR campaign to address a significant issue. I chose NASA and focused on the challenge of government defunding, proposing a campaign aimed at securing the necessary support and funding for the organization.
Project Deliverables:
- Client Profile: I researched and developed a detailed profile of NASA, including its history, current initiatives, and its importance to national and global advancement.
- Issues and Communications Objective: I identified key business, regulatory, and social issues impacting NASA, such as the potential consequences of reduced funding on space exploration and technological development. From this, I outlined the communications objectives for the campaign.
- Memo: I practiced professional memo writing, proposing the PR campaign and requesting a hypothetical meeting with NASA leadership to discuss next steps. This exercise allowed me to apply business communication skills in a real-world context.
- Press Release: In this portion of the assignment, I assumed the role of a journalist on a media team. I crafted a press release designed to inform the public about NASA’s funding challenges and highlight the campaign’s goals, practicing media outreach and effective communication strategies.
- Feature Story: To connect NASA to a broader audience, I researched Eric Fossum, the inventor of the camera phone, and wrote a feature story that emphasized the real-world impact of NASA-funded innovations. The story aimed to show how NASA’s work is integral to everyday life, further illustrating the importance of securing ongoing funding.
Note: All research and written content for this project, except for factual research, is fictional and created as part of a mock campaign for practice.
